Jamaica
was named from the Arawak word "xaymaca", meaning land of wood and
water. And Jamaica is surely that. Most of Jamaica's 2.5 million residents are
of African descent, though the early influences of British rule remain a part of
the island's unique culture. For instance, people drive on the left side of the
road, cricket is a national passion, and a Prime Minister heads government. Nevertheless,
Jamaica's tropical climate and landscape make for the perfect vacation getaway.
With 120 rivers running through the island's 4,411 square miles, there's a
never-ending array of water activities to be enjoyed, from scuba diving past
colorful reefs, to climbing up waterfalls, to river-rafting and more. On land
the options are also endless. Tee off at any one of the pristine golf courses,
hike mountain paths, or lounge on the beach and listen to reggae music. Of
course, a true Jamaican experience also means sampling some jerk chicken.
